Psoriasis is a skin disorder that can affect both males or females. It is an inflammatory of the skin with symptoms that contain widespread flush, severe itching, and pain. Red rashes appear on the surface of the skin and start to itch. They form plaques over the reddened lesions covered by silvery white scales which are really dead skin cells. These flaky skin build up mainly on the knees, elbows, scalp and trunk or any other body parts. This type of discomfort and pain can affect the patient’s quality of daily life. It can also affect the lives of the family members who have to live with their sufferings in the same house. More serious stage of the skin inflammation can lead to inflammation of the joints, which we commonly call “arthritis”.

There is unfortunately no known cure for Psoriasis currently. Skin specialists or dermatologists can only recommend or provide small term treatments which would be different from one patient to another. That earnings the treatment can only clear Psoriasis for only a certain period of time. There are innumerable conservative forms of treatments that may leave you wondering which one is right.

We can generally find 3 categories of conventional treatments for psoriasis i.e.:

- Topical treatment is applied to the skin for mild to moderate Psoriasis

- Photo treatment is set alight, usually ultraviolet, applied to the skin) for moderate to severe Psoriasis

- Systemic treatment is to be taken orally or by injection or infusion) for moderate, severe or disabling Psoriasis.

The new products like Theraflax and z-92 may help but as of now, patients have not obtained its full effect.

Recently, a new alternative method of psoriasis treatment is with the use of live fish called “Doctorfish” (or Garra rufa). This practice of using fish to treat itchy skin was first used in the small towns of Kangal and Sivas in Turkey where they are largely found in the area. The spa at Kangal has been a well loved psoriasis treatment centre in view of the fact that 1988.People with this skin disorder have been flocking here to have their infected skin nibbled at by the doctor fish. These doctor fish live and breed in outdoor pools of some Turkish spas but now they are pretty well loved in the Asian countries like Japan, Taiwan and most recently, Singapore. These fishes live in warm waters of high temperatures of around 36C. The water condition does not produce enough nutrients for the fish with voracious appetite so they feed well on dead scabby skin of psoriasis sufferers. These fishes will not nibble their healthy skin which will be left to grow. The saliva in the mouths of the doctor fish is the vital element in the treatment . In addition, the selenium- rich waters of the spa are also helpful in the treatment of psoriasis too.

But this type of treatment can provide temporary relief only but is not a cure for the skin disorder. It is reported by psoriasis patients that it does help and thus doctor fish spas have sprouted in many countries like Japan, Germany or Singapore.
