Psoriasis & UV treatment Part 1

beardfreak1969 questioned:

As the title suggests – this is a two part series (only small clips) showing the before & after effect of UV treatment on chronic Psoriasis. I have minor problems with this complaint and manage to control the symptoms mostly through diet and creams, but I’d like to experiment with UV during a flare up. Sorry for the small clip size. Due to the source of the video, when joined, the audio track had pops & clicks. Please see part 2 for the remarkable results! Part 2: uk.youtube.com…

Psoriasis and Self Esteem

Jennifer Sarpong asked:

EMOTIONAL SETBACKS

Psoriasis can be difficult emotionally and physically, and have a big effect on your self-esteem but it doesn’t have to get the best of you. It’s not uncommon to experience a sense of shock, frustration, confusion, and anger about what’s happening to your skin. Having these feelings may lead to deep sadness or depression.

One of the hardest things about living with psoriasis is that you encounter cycles of strong emotions, usually when the psoriasis goes into remission or reappears. The disease is unpredictable, and the emotions it triggers may reoccur. Common triggers are embarrassment, anger and guilt. You may be afraid that your psoriasis returning or getting worse, or being rejected by others. It is important to respect your feelings as they occur and to learn to face them, so they do not make you a prisoner of your emotions and put your life on standstill.

Some people show little emotion over having psoriasis, while others react intensely and this doesn’t depend on the extent of the case. Emotional responses are never the same. Getting beyond these emotional setbacks is possible, but it may take sometime to achieve. Therapy, support groups, and treatment are all possible options but most importantly you must understand that Psoriasis is not a death sentence, but an just an issue like any other, to be dealt with.

WHAT IS PSORIASIS

Psoriasis [pronounced sore-EYE-ah-sis] is a noncontiguous, chronic skin disease. According to the National Institutes of Health, as many as 7.5 million Americans have psoriasis.

The most common form, plaque [plak] psoriasis, appears as raised, red patches or lesions covered with a silvery white buildup of dead skin cells, called scale.

There are 5 main types of psoriasis

Plaque: Most common form of the disease

Guttate: Appears as small red spots on the skin

Inverse: Occurs in armpits, groin and skin folds

Pustular: White blisters surrounded by red skin

Erythrodermic: Intense redness over large area

COPING

Do not worry about the future. Your skin doesn’t have to be the deciding factor in life’s important decisions, like your choice of work, whether to attend college, responsibilities for being on your own and the kind of person you want to be. People who have psoriasis have normal lives.

IMPORTANT PRACTICAL TIPS ON REBOUNDING YOUR SELF-ESTEEM AND DEALING WITH PSORIASIS

1.The more people know about and understand psoriasis, the better and easier it will be for you. Be willing to discuss your psoriasis with others, to the point that you are still comfortable.

2. Real friends will want to know about you and will want to help. They won’t be put off by psoriasis.

3.There is nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. You didn’t do anything wrong. Skin disease has no meaning other than what it is, even if other people attribute odd things to it .It is natural to feel anxious, angry and depressed. Friends can help.

4.People around you can be very supportive. You can help your friends support you by letting them know that psoriasis is not contagious and that it’s the result of skin cells rapidly reproducing.

5. With God, there is hope, help, and healing to be found. When you have the most important relationship you will ever have in tact, everything else will be trivial.

Stop Wasting Money On The Latest Treatment Of Psoriasis

Wendy Owen questioned:

know that psoriasis is an internal disease and not just a skin complaint it will be simpler to control. You will no longer need to waste money on messy ointments and latest treatments of psoriasis that give only temporary relief at best and as a replacement for concentrate finding lasting relief from this embarrassing and unsightly condition What is psoriasis? It is an immune system disorder where skin cells or keratinocytes multiply quicker than their normal 28-30 day cycle. These extra skin cells then build up on the surface of the skin forming red inflamed plaques or lesions with silvery scales, which can be found on all parts of the body, but more commonly on the elbows and knees and occasionally on the scalp, arms and legs. Psoriasis is not fussy whom it attacks! People of any age, sex or race can be converted into victims. But the severity of the disease can vary momentously in different people. Some people only ever have one outbreak and are never troubled again even as others endure a severe form and are in constant discomfort. The severity of psoriasis is leisurely by a system called PASI, or psoriasis area and severity index which is based on the skin area affected and the level of inflammation and flush present. Causes of psoriasis An immune system malfunction is believed to be the most common cause. The immune system is mistakenly triggered which causes an increase in the white blood cells which causes inflammation. Stress, especially prolonged stress can also be a trigger. Genetics may also play a part and some doctors believed it can be passed down through the generations. Certain medications can also bring on an attack. Is psoriasis contagious? The answer to this is a certain no. It cannot be passed on to others on contact or in any other way. How can I find a psoriasis treatment Many treatments have been tried but most have only a temporary effect as they are treating the disease from outside and not from within. The most common medical treatment is topically applied cortisone cream followed by coal tar ointment, anthralin and calamine lotion. Of all these the calamine lotion is probably the safest but it only stop the itching for a small even as. Coal tar ointment can be effective but is messy and can cause skin irritation. Cortisone products can causes lessening of the skin when used consistantly so avoid these if possible. Some people find that moisturizing the skin can bring relief. If you are trying this only use a moisturizer with natural ingredients as one containing mineral oil can do more harm than excellent. Exposure to sunlight or ultra violet A rays (UVA) is one of the latest treatments of psoriasis, but the side effects can be skin cancer and premature wrinkling of the skin. Exposure to UV should be monitered very carefully. Then there are the internal treatments such as methotrexate and cyclosporine. I like to say “if you can’t pronounce it – don’t eat it” Well nowhere is this more right than these two examples! Methotrexate can lead to hair loss, decreased resistance to infection, headaches and miscarriage among other things. Side effects associated with cyclosporine contain insomnia, acne, stomach pains and nausea. Is there anything that’s safe to use to treat psoriasis? In view of the fact that the disease is triggered by the immune system the logical answer is to treat the immune system. Herbal remedies can nurture our skin from the inside making them very effective. Small lifestle changes such as eating a healthy diet and drinking bounty of water can also give your immune system a boost. Because psoriasis comes from within, it will always respond better to an internal treatment. Treat the body from within and use a natural anti itching cream or lotion on the skin itself. We can’t yet cure psoriasis but we can manage it well enough so it doesn’t have such a debilitating effect on our lives.

My 1 1/2 yr. old Cav. King Charles has dry scabs on his back. Looks like psoriasis. Any ideas?

Bard Teacher questioned:

They’re crusty and scaley and range in size from 1/2 inch in diameter to smaller and are stretched out in shape. He doesn’t seem to be itchy, but if I try to scratch off some of the scales, he moves his leg as if he’s scratching. What could this be?
